Equity Stop
An equity stop is an account-level risk rule that closes positions or halts trading when trading-account equity reaches a defined loss or drawdown threshold.
Equity stop is an account-level risk control that closes positions, blocks new entries, or both when trading-account equity reaches a configured threshold. Unlike a stop-loss on one trade, it watches combined floating profit and loss across the account. It matters in leveraged or multi-position systems, where several acceptable trades can create an unacceptable total drawdown.
How an Equity Stop Works
The controller reads current account equity, compares it with a reference value, and triggers a protective action when the rule is breached. The reference may be starting balance, start-of-day equity, a fixed cash floor, or a rolling equity high-water mark.
- A fixed equity stop loss triggers at a defined account-equity floor.
- A percentage drawdown rule compares current equity with a chosen starting value.
- A trailing equity rule moves its floor upward as account equity reaches new highs.
This is separate from broker liquidation logic. Equity, margin, free margin and stop out level are linked, but the broker's stop-out rule protects margin requirements; an equity stop is your own earlier risk boundary.
Equity Stop Versus a Price Stop
An equity stop controls the account; a price stop controls a position. In stock trading, the phrase equity stop loss sometimes means a stop order on an equity security, so context matters. An ATR-based stop loss on equities uses Average True Range to place a price-based exit around one instrument, while an account equity stop reacts to portfolio-level profit and loss.
The distinction matters in testing. A strategy can hit an account equity threshold even when no single position reaches its own stop, especially when positions are correlated or spreads widen together.
Implementing an Equity Stop in MT4, MT5, and Automation
An equity stop EA on MetaTrader typically polls account equity on each tick or timer event, then sends close requests for all covered positions and disables further entries. Searches such as EA MT4 stop equity loss, MT4 equity trailing stop, and trailing stop equity MT4 EA usually refer to this pattern.

Our product sizes XAUUSD positions by equity and halts entries when daily loss or spread limits are reached.
Production code needs more than if equity < limit. Close requests may be rejected, delayed, or filled worse than expected. A robust controller records trigger equity, prevents duplicate execution, retries open tickets, and confirms exposure is actually flat.
Daily and Trailing Equity Rules
A daily equity stop resets at a defined session boundary. In an EasyLanguage strategy that must stop trading after daily equity is reached, the session date and treatment of open profit must be explicit, or the rule may reset incorrectly.
Trailing equity stops need a clear high-water-mark rule. Deposits and withdrawals can create false peaks, so operators often normalize cash flows or track strategy-only equity.
Failure Modes and Diagnostics
A common failure mode occurs during spread expansion or thin liquidity. Mark-to-market equity can dip through the threshold for a moment, trigger a close-all routine, then recover—too late, because orders were already sent. Confirmation logic or hysteresis can reduce false triggers, but it also delays protection, so the trade-off must be deliberate. An equity stop also cannot guarantee the realized exit level: gaps, slippage, API outages, and broker liquidation can push losses beyond the trigger.
- Log broker-reported equity and the exact threshold at trigger time.
- Record every close response, rejected order, and remaining position.
- Check whether hedged or pending orders are included in the protection rule.
- Verify session resets after reconnects, terminal restarts, and daylight-saving changes.
