Exchange Netflow
Exchange netflow measures the difference between cryptocurrency entering and leaving tracked exchange wallets during a chosen period.
Exchange netflow is the difference between cryptocurrency sent into tracked exchange wallets and cryptocurrency withdrawn from them during a chosen time window. It is usually calculated as exchange inflow minus exchange outflow, so a positive value means more coins entered exchanges than left, while a negative value means withdrawals were larger. Traders use it as an on-chain liquidity signal because exchange deposits can increase immediately tradable supply, whereas withdrawals may suggest custody, staking, collateral movement, or longer-term holding.
The metric matters, but it is not a direct buy or sell instruction. A deposit can support selling, yet it may also fund derivatives margin, market making, lending, or an internal transfer. The useful question is not merely “Is netflow positive?” but “Which asset, exchange type, wallet set, and time window produced it?”
How Inflow, Outflow, and Netflow Are Calculated
An on-chain data provider first maintains labels for deposit addresses, hot wallets, cold wallets, custody wallets, and other addresses believed to be controlled by an exchange. It then sums transfers crossing the boundary of that labeled wallet set. The basic relationship behind exchange in/outflow & netflow is netflow = inflow - outflow.
- Inflow: coins moving from non-exchange addresses into tracked exchange addresses.
- Outflow: coins moving from tracked exchange addresses to addresses outside that set.
- Netflow: the signed difference for one interval, such as one hour, six hours, or one day.
- Exchange reserve: the estimated balance held by the tracked exchange wallet set after all movements.
That sounds simple, but address labeling does the heavy lifting. A common production failure occurs when an exchange rotates deposit addresses or moves funds between hot and cold wallets. If the provider has not linked both sides correctly, an internal reshuffle can appear as a large inflow or outflow. Operators usually verify an unusual spike by checking the underlying transactions, counterparties, exchange reserve change, and whether several providers report the same direction.
Reading Positive and Negative Netflow Without Jumping to Conclusions
Positive bitcoin exchange netflow is often read as potential sell-side pressure because more BTC has reached exchanges. Negative netflow is often read as accumulation because more BTC has left. Both interpretations are conditional. Using Z-Scores and Reserve Ratios

- Confirm whether the chart reports native coins, token units, or USD value.
- Check whether the latest interval is complete or still updating.
- Separate spot, derivatives, and unknown exchange categories where possible.
- Compare netflow with exchange reserve change; a large flow with no matching reserve move may signal relabeling or internal movement.
- Inspect transaction count and transfer-size bands. One whale transfer and thousands of small deposits can produce the same net total but imply different behavior.
